On 14th June 2017, Your Sanctuary, a local charity that supports people experiencing domestic abuse, marked 40 years of important work in Woking and neighbouring boroughs with a celebration afternoon here at H G Wells.

Our Kemp room was buzzing with excitement on a warm Wednesday afternoon and drinks were flowing while canapes were devoured with gusto!

The event was opened by Fiamma Pather, CEO of Your Sanctuary, followed by guest speakers and an art exhibition. The walls were adorned with information displays on the history and current work of the charity.

Set up in 1977, Your Sanctuary was first known as Surrey Women’s Aid, and provided a safe house for women and their children fleeing violence, at a time when there were few other options for victims of domestic abuse. Today, Your Sanctuary’s extensive services include two refuges, an outreach service for women, men and children, a counselling services and a helpline. In addition, it has generated funds for play equipment at the refuges, and has run creative and therapy workshops for survivors of domestic abuse.

The reception was well attended, with representatives of Your Sanctuary on hand to  give local businesses and organisations advice on how they could improve their domestic abuse policies and to discuss the opportunities available for joint PR work, volunteering, and reciprocal support.

Your Sanctuary’s work in supporting women, men and children affected by domestic abuse depends upon the generosity of individuals, local community groups, trusts, foundations and their corporate partners.

The charity’s admirable work has helped many victims over the years and continues to do so. Particularly the vulnerable children who need a great deal of specialised support to help them on the road to recovery and their future life.

As individuals we can make a difference by just signing up to Easy Fundraising when shopping on line on sites such as M&S, Amazon or Argos as a percentage of our sale will be sent directly to Your Sanctuary. There are 2,000 retailers on the site and some donate as much as 15%. In a busy world where many of us have little time or money to spare to help such a worthy cause it is heartening to know that we can all do our bit!

– The whole event was a huge success! It was fantastic to come together and celebrate but also to continue to raise awareness of the charity and all the work we do.
