On 14 June, Your Sanctuary - a local charity that supports people experiencing domestic abuse - will mark 40 years of important work in Woking and neighbouring boroughs, with a celebration afternoon at the H.G. Wells Conference and Events Centre.
The event will be opened by Fiamma Pather, CEO of Your Sanctuary, at 4pm, and will include drinks, canapes, guest speakers and an art exhibition. There will also be informative displays on the history and current work of the charity, as well as networking until 6pm.
Set up in 1977, Your Sanctuary was first known as Surrey Women's Aid, and provided a safe house for women and their children fleeing violence, at a time when there were few other options for victims of domestic abuse. Today, Your Sanctuary's extensive services include two refuges, an outreach service for women, men and children, a counselling service and a helpline. In addition, it has generated funds for play equipment at the refuges, and has run creative and therapy workshops for survivors of domestic abuse.
Local businesses and organisations interested in finding out more about how they could improve their domestic abuse policies would be very welcome to attend the celebration, when representatives of Your Sanctuary will be on hand to answer any questions, and to discuss the opportunities available for joint PR work, volunteering, and reciprocal support.
