One of the most popular public events that we hold at H G Wells Conference & Event Centre every year is the Woking Symphony Orchestra Family Concert each January.  This is always a very popular event, and 2019 was no exception, being a complete sell-out before doors opened.  Families with children of all ages were welcome, many of whom experienced a live symphony orchestra for the first time.

Ticket prices were a very reasonable £7 per person and children under two years were free of charge.  H G Wells offered a box office facility for the Orchestra for people to phone or pop in to buy tickets in advance.

The concert was a fun, child-friendly introduction to classical music and most exciting part of all for the children was the opportunity to try out the instruments after the concert.

This year the Orchestra played Bernstein's exciting Candide Overture, the 1st movement of Grieg's famous Piano Concerto featuring brilliant young pianist Max Pemberton and, to finish, Britten's informative Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, ably narrated by Richard Lines-Davies.

The Wells Room has brilliant acoustics for all sorts of musical and orchestral events such as this, our comprehensive sound system with four separately controllable speaker systems gives superb sound and can be controlled from a small control desk on the stage or from a 32 channel remote system from the body of the hall.

One-metre-high staging was set up by our operations staff with seating for 75 members of the orchestra and a further 420 seats for the audience.  Our grand piano was included for their use.

The extensive lighting system consisting of over 60 lights both LED and incandescent provided on stage and front of stage lighting.

If you are interested in coming along to Woking Symphony Orchestra’s next concert on Saturday 23rd March, it is a Classically French event, with music by Debussy, Saint-Saens and Franck.  Ticket prices are adults £14 and under 16 / students £7.  Other concert dates are 22nd June 2019, 23 November 2019, and the next Family Concert is on 18th January 2020.
